St. Narcissus of Jerusalem–The Bishop of Miracles!

Discover the inspiring story of St. Narcissus, a holy bishop remembered for the miracle of turning water into oil. Despite facing false accusations and many hardships, he remained faithful to God and lived to an extraordinary old age.

Saint Narcissus of Jerusalem was an early Christian bishop remembered for his holiness, wisdom, strong faith, and extraordinary long life. He served the Church during a time when Christians faced persecution and hardship.

His life is especially remembered for a remarkable miracle involving water and oil, a painful false accusation, and his peaceful return to the Church after years of solitude.

A holy bishop of Jerusalem

St. Narcissus was born around AD 99, according to traditional accounts. He became Bishop of Jerusalem and was known for his devotion to God, his leadership, and his concern for the Christian community.

He helped guide believers during a difficult period in the early Church. Ancient Church historian Eusebius also records his involvement in discussions about the proper date for celebrating Easter.

The miracle of water turning into oil

One of the most famous stories about St. Narcissus happened during the Easter Vigil.

The Christians had gathered in the church to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Oil lamps illuminated the church during the sacred celebration.

Suddenly, the deacons discovered that the oil had run out.

Without oil, the lamps would go dark. The people became worried because the Easter celebration was still continuing.

But Bishop Narcissus remained calm.

He instructed the deacons to bring water from a nearby well.

When they returned, Narcissus prayed over the water with complete trust in God. He then told them to pour the water into the lamps.

According to the ancient Christian account, something extraordinary happened.

The water miraculously turned into oil!

The lamps continued burning, and the faithful witnessed what they believed was a wonderful sign of God's power.

The historian Eusebius records that some of this miraculous oil was preserved by Christians in Jerusalem as a remembrance of the event.

The false accusation against St. Narcissus

Although Narcissus was respected by many Christians, some people disliked his strict discipline and commitment to righteousness.

Three men plotted against him and spread a serious false accusation.

To convince others that they were telling the truth, each man made a terrible oath.

The first declared that he should perish by fire if he was lying.

The second declared that he should suffer from a terrible disease.

The third declared that he should lose his eyesight.

Despite their accusations, many Christians continued to believe in Narcissus because they knew his holy character.

Deeply troubled by the wickedness surrounding him, Narcissus withdrew from Jerusalem and lived in solitude for several years.

The truth is revealed

According to Eusebius, the three accusers eventually suffered the very misfortunes they had invoked upon themselves.

The first man died when his house was destroyed by fire.

The second suffered a terrible disease that covered his body.

The third, frightened by what had happened, publicly confessed that the accusations against Narcissus were false.

Overwhelmed with sorrow and repentance, he wept so intensely that, according to the account, he eventually lost his eyesight.

The innocence of Narcissus was finally revealed.

This story has traditionally been understood as a reminder of the seriousness of false accusations and the importance of truth.

The return of the holy bishop

During Narcissus's absence, other bishops had been appointed to lead the Church in Jerusalem.

After many years, Narcissus unexpectedly returned.

The Christian community was overjoyed to see him again. Because of his holiness and the suffering he had endured, the faithful asked him to resume his position as bishop.

Narcissus agreed and once again served the Church.

However, he was now extremely old and could no longer perform all his responsibilities alone.

Bishop Alexander was therefore appointed to serve alongside him.

Together, they continued guiding the Christians of Jerusalem.

His extraordinary long life

St. Narcissus is remembered as one of the exceptionally long-lived bishops of the early Church.

In a letter preserved by Eusebius, Bishop Alexander mentioned that Narcissus was 116 years old and continued encouraging Christians to remain united in faith.

Tradition places his death around AD 216, although his exact birth and death dates are uncertain.

He is commemorated on October 29 in the Roman Catholic tradition, while the Orthodox Church also commemorates him on August 7.

Heavenly Father, through the example of St. Narcissus, teach us to trust You during difficult times.
